Hundreds of people attended a mayoral campaign kickoff party for veteran city councillor Rob Ford in north Etobicoke on Friday night.

Supporters spent the evening at the Toronto Congress Centre on Dixon Road to hear Ford outline his platform.

Ford is promising to repeal Mayor David Miller's vehicle registration tax and land transfer tax. He also wants to have the TTC declared an essential service and would halve the number of councillors at city hall.

Federal finance minister Jim Flaherty was one of several high-profile politicians in attendance.

Reports are conflicting about how many people attended the event in total. Ford has insisted there were 3,000, while a local newspaper estimates the number at half of that.

Ford is well-known to be a conservative voice on council and prides himself on spending very little taxpayer money.
