OAKVILLE, Ont. - Police say they doubt a truck driver even realized he hit an 83-year-old Oakville man while backing up in a parking lot.

The senior died this morning after being struck by a garbage truck in a restaurant parking lot in Oakville, just west of Toronto.

Halton Region police say the man had parked his car behind the restaurant and was walking across the parking lot when he was hit at about 8:30 a.m.

Police say it appears the private company truck had just finished picking up garbage from the restaurant, at Iroquois Shore Road near Trafalgar Road, when it hit the man.

The driver, a 30-year-old Hamilton man, continued on his route until police stopped him a short time later on Oak Park Boulevard.

Police say he was distraught when told what had happened. The victim's name has not been released.
