UNITED NATIONS - The United Nations says it is still working to secure the release of a Canadian envoy missing in Niger.

Robert Fowler, the UN envoy to Niger, and his Canadian aide Louis Guay and their driver have been missing for over a week.

Their car was found abandoned after the trio had visited a mining company site.

The UN says it is working with the governments of Canada and Niger.

It also says it's in contact with what it calls "regional actors."

It is assumed Fowler and his crew have been kidnapped for ransom, but there are conflicting claims about that -- and no demands have been made public.
