TORONTO - The 2010 Winter Olympics are headed to the movies.

The media consortium in charge of broadcast coverage says the Vancouver Games will be beamed live in HD at 64 Cineplex Entertainment theatres across central and western Canada.

It says Cineplex, which runs theatres from Quebec through British Columbia, will dedicate one auditorium a day to broadcast CTV and RDS feeds throughout the Games.

It would cost fans $9.95 for individual, one-day tickets, or $29.95 for unlimited access to broadcasts throughout 17 days of the Olympics.

So-called "theatre passports" go on sale Dec. 18 at participating theatres while individual one-day tickets will be available Jan. 15.

While a first for the Winter Games, theatre broadcasts have proven to be a boost for other marquee events including performances by the New York Metropolitan Opera and National Hockey League games.

The Winter Games run Feb. 12 to 28 in Vancouver and Whistler, B.C.
