TORONTO - A Montreal movie about a man's deadly gamble has scored a North American distribution deal at the Slamdance Film Festival.

The dark comedy, `The Ante,' is among the films screening at Slamdance, an alternative festival taking place in Park City, Utah.

Panorama Entertainment says it will send `The Ante,' directed by Max Perrier, on the festival circuit and release it to theatres in the spring.

Meanwhile, a Halifax film about murderous Christmas trees nabbed kudos at the neighbouring Sundance Film Festival, which announced jury prizes in short filmmaking Wednesday.

Jason Eisener's bloody `Treevenge', starring Jonathan Torrens of the `Trailer Park Boys,' got an honourable mention for its tale of lethal Christmas trees fed up with being man's yuletide decoration.

Full awards at Sundance, which runs through Jan 25 in Utah, will be announced Jan. 24.
