Nearly 200 protesters shut down several main intersections in the downtown core Thursday afternoon in a demonstration against the way the Harmonized Sales Tax will affect aboriginal people.

First Nations groups, who began Thursday's protest at Queen's Park, say the HST will take away their point-of-sale exemption on provincial tax.

They began moving shortly after 4 p.m., blocking off the intersection of Yonge and Dundas Streets before moving west to University Avenue and back to Queen's Park.

A recent report, commissioned by the province's chiefs, says the new tax will cost Ontario native people between $85 million and $120 million in the first year it is implemented.

The HST is set to be implemented across Ontario on July 1, and will merge the provincial and federal sales tax.
