Ontario's New Democratic Party is calling for a law that requires people to opt out of post-mortem organ donation.

Two NDP members are launching a bill that would require Canadians who are opposed to organ donation to sign paperwork indicating their decision.

In the current system, signed donor cards are required for organs to be removed from a deceased patient.

Peter Kormos (Welland) and Cheri DiNovo (Parkdale-High Park say most people want to donate their organs and save lives, but many forget to sign their cards until it's too late.

The bill will be launched in the fall, and will mark the third time the NDP has tried to change the legislation.

Kormos says many politicians get too squeamish talking about organs do something about the backlog of patients waiting for donations.

Almost 1,700 people in Ontario are in need of organs transfers.
