Rob Ford may be gaining in the polls but Torontonians are hesitant to put their trust in the city’s scandal plagued incumbent mayor, according to a new poll from Nanos Research.

The telephone poll asked respondents to name the most trustworthy mayoral candidate and John Tory emerged on top with 42 per cent of the vote compared to 29 per cent for Olivia Chow and 19 per cent for Ford.

Tory was also the top choice for the most competent candidate (51 per cent), the candidate that can best represent Toronto (50 per cent), the candidate most likely to keep campaign promises (36 per cent), the candidate most likely to control spending (41 per cent) and the candidate with the best vision for urban transit (38 per cent).

Ford, meanwhile, fared poorly on the competency question (18 per cent) but was competitive on the question of which candidate would keep spending in line (34 per cent).

Chow finished last on the spending question (15 per cent) but fared better on the question of which candidate would best represent Toronto (25 per cent).

The result comes one day after Nanos released the first part of their poll, showing that Tory has the support of 42 per cent of decided voters compared to 28 per cent for Ford and 26 per cent for Chow.

In addition to polling residents on their choice for mayor and their thoughts on the various candidates, Nanos Research also asked those polled to identify their top issue and transit/gridlock was the runaway choice with 49 per cent of the vote.

Other issues to garner votes included the need for a new mayor (11 per cent), the need for accountability at city hall (seven per cent), taxes (seven per cent) and city debt (six per cent).

The poll of 1,000 random Torontonians was conducted between Aug. 27 and Aug. 31 and is considered accurate to within 3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
