Police have charged a 28-year-old Oakville church worker with the alleged sexual assault of a teen.

The charges stem from a report made to police July 4 about an employee at The Meeting House, a Christian theology-based church located at 2700 Bristol Circle, Halton police Sgt. Chantal Corner said.

Corner said the alleged victim is a 17-year-old girl. Information on when and where the alleged assault took place was not provided by police.

The suspect no longer works at the church, according to Matt Vincent, lead pastor at The Meeting House.

“Two weeks ago we became aware that a member of our staff was involved in inappropriate conduct with a student,” Vincent said in a written statement Thursday.

“Immediately upon hearing and verifying this information, we took immediate action including informing Halton Regional Police. The individual in question is no longer an employee of The Meeting House. His actions were in direct violation of our plan to protect policy.”

The allegations against the staff member have not been proven in court.

A suspect identified as David Peter Churchill is charged with sexual assault and sexual exploitation.

He has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear in a Milton court Aug. 12.
