OTTAWA - The governor general is encouraging Canadians to get fit for the new year.

In his annual holiday-time message, David Johnston says 2013 should be a year of healthy living.

He says such a New Years resolution is the mark of a "smart and caring nation."

Johnston says the benefits of keeping your mind and body fit are undeniable.

Looking back on 2012, the governor general says Canadians saw a number of milestones, including the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

As Commander of the Order of Military Merit, Johnston also presided over the 40th anniversaries of both the decorations for bravery and the order of military merit.

Johnston says the 100th anniversary of the Grey Cup was also a highlight of his year.
