Toronto police have charged a 19-year-old man in connection with a fatal hit-and-run incident that left a cyclist dead in Yorkville Saturday night.

The collision happened on Avenue Road near Davenport Road at around 11:30 p.m.

“The bicycle was attempting to make a left hand turn into the intersection and as it was attempting to negotiate that turn it was struck,” Const. Clint Stibbe told CP24. “The vehicle and driver then failed to remain at the scene of the collision and the vehicle was in fact last seen entering eastbound Highway 401 from Avenue Road.”

The 26-year-old male cyclist from Burlington was pronounced dead following the collision, police said.

Police said Sunday they were looking for a 2010-2014 White Hyundai with front-end damage, including to the windshield and asked the driver to turn himself in.

“We are asking those occupants to contact a lawyer and then contact police,” Stibbe said Sunday morning.

Police confirmed Sunday evening that the teen surrendered himself to police earlier today.

According to Stibbe, the vehicle had more than one occupant at the time of the crash and officers are looking to speak to all passengers.

Mitchell Irwin of Keswick has been charged with criminal negligence causing death, dangerous driving causing death and failing to stop at the scene of an accident causing death.

He is scheduled to appear in court on June 15.

Police are asking anyone with information about the vehicle’s whereabouts between 11:30 p.m. on Saturday and noon on Sunday to contact investigators.
