A 65-year-old man is dead and three other pedestrians remain in hospital after a car plowed into a group of people on a North York sidewalk Thursday afternoon.

It happened in the Yonge Street and Sheppard Avenue area around 1:30 p.m.

According to police, a vehicle was travelling eastbound on Park Home Avenue when it struck a cab. Witnesses say the vehicle then accelerated through the intersection at Yonge Street where it struck one person before continuing onto the sidewalk striking three other pedestrians.

The vehicle continued on into a parking lot at the northeast corner of the intersection and struck two parked vehicles.

“We heard the bang, and then the roar of the acceleration,” witness Ben Lorriman described.

“It was the bodies that was the most traumatic part of it all.”

One person - a 65-year-old man - was pronounced dead at the scene.

Three other pedestrians were taken to hospital following the incident. Two are currently in stable condition, while the third is in life-threatening condition, Toronto police Const. Clint Stibbe said Thursday night.

The female driver of the vehicle was transported to hospital with minor injuries.

Bystanders rushed in to try and help those injured before paramedics arrived.

It’s not yet clear why the vehicle slammed into the group.

Yonge Street was closed in both directions between Empress and Elmwood avenues following the crash. It was reopened shortly before 8 p.m.
