A 17-year-old girl was pronounced dead on scene and a 22-year-old woman who was herself seriously hurt faces charges following a single-vehicle crash in Markham early Friday morning.

According to police, a white Range Rover was travelling eastbound on 14th Avenue near Markham Road at around 3:10 a.m. when it failed to negotiate a turn, struck a median and rolled over multiple times.

The deceased victim was ejected from the vehicle during the crash while the other two victims had to be extricated by emergency workers.

The accident happened while there was heavy fog in the area, though police say it is too early to determine whether that may have been a factor.

On Friday afternoon, York Regional Police said a driver identified as Jing Jing Pan, 22, was arrested and charged with dangerous driving causing death.

Police say that the Major Collision Bureau will be conducting a full investigation.

Police closed 14th Avenue west of Markham Road for a period of time as a result.
