CONCEPTION BAY SOUTH, N.L. -- An 11-year-old boy who was stabbed on an athletic field in Newfoundland is recovering at home and talking to his mother about playing soccer again.
The president of the Conception Bay South Soccer Association says he spoke to the boy's mother on Wednesday night about her son's progress since he was stabbed on Sept. 25.
"I'm pleased to tell you he was discharged this past Tuesday, he's at home, he's doing very well, his mother is very proud of how he's progressing," said Calvin Randell in an interview.
"He's very eager to get back to doing what he loves to do, which is playing soccer."
Randell said the boy's family is grateful for an outpouring of support from the community since the young player was stabbed on the field in Topsail, N.L.
The mother is calling the boy "her miracle," said Randell. "Everyone is very pleased with the pace of his physical recovery and ... the emotional recovery as well."
The incident happened during a routine evening skills clinic at the sports centre in the community west of St. John's. Officials have said about 60 players were on the field when a man rushed into the playing area.
Randell said at one point during the boy's treatment, he was in an induced coma.
The boy cannot be identified because of a court-ordered publication ban.
Nicholas Layman, 19, has been charged with attempted murder. He is undergoing a month-long psychiatric assessment before his case returns to provincial court on Oct. 31.
