ORILLIA, Ont. -- Tough bananas if you want to own an exotic pet in Orillia.
Orillia city council has passed a bylaw that will see its citizens banned from owning exotic animals such as snakes, monkeys and tigers.
Mayor Angelo Orsi says the bylaw stems from an incident earlier this year where five pythons were stolen from a residence in the city.
He says the city needs to be diligent in creating safety measures to protect both the public and species of animals that aren't accustomed to the region's climate.
Current owners of exotic pets are exempt from the ban, but will be required to register their animals with the city within 90 days.
The by-law also sets a fine of $400 for non-compliance.
