Police in Oshawa say three teenagers are facing charges for allegedly driving recklessly wearing clown masks in an attempt to scare members of the public.

According to police, on Friday at around 3:30 p.m., police were called to the area of Simcoe Street North and Taunton Road after receiving reports about a suspicious vehicle.

Witnesses told police that the suspicious vehicle was a grey Saturn with three occupants who were all wearing clown masks. Police say the occupants were reportedly stopping near other cars and pedestrians in a dangerous manner.

Two of the suspects, according to witnesses, attempted to scare people by opening the car doors and leaning out the windows while the vehicle was moving.

Officers were able to track down the Saturn and the three occupants of the vehicle — two 19-year-old males and an 18-year-old female — were charged with causing a nuisance and careless driving.

Durham Regional Police say officers have responded to 31 calls regarding clowns since the beginning of this month.

Members of the public can report suspicious activity by calling police or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
