Homicide investigators have identified the man shot and killed Saturday behind the wheel of a car in the area of Yonge and Charles streets early Saturday morning.

Twenty-five-year-old Charles Shillingford of Toronto was shot behind the wheel of a car sometime before 2:25 a.m. on Saturday, police say.

Investigators say Shillingford was struck by multiple bullets after he got into a car outside a nearby nightclub.

Once hit, police say he sped away from the scene, striking the rear of a taxi before crashing the vehicle into a building near Yonge and College streets a short while later.

Shillingford was taken to St. Michael’s Hospital but succumbed to his wounds on arrival, police said. He died of a gunshot wound to the chest.

On Saturday, police said they did not believe the shooting was gang-related. Police say Shillingford was known to police.

Investigators are continuing to interview witnesses and seek out security camera footage of the incident.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact Det. Murray Barnes at 416-808-7400, ext. 77406 or contact Crime Stoppers at 416-222-8477 (TIPS).
