Police have identified a man who was found dead in a North York apartment Sunday morning as 30-year-old Edwin Carpio of Ajax.

Carpio was found dead from an apparent gunshot wound inside an apartment above a Western Union near Keele Street and Wilson Avenue at around 7 a.m.

In a release Sunday night, police said the apartment was being operated as an illegal after-hours establishment. They said they believe six to 10 patrons were in the apartment at the time of the shooting, but left before officers arrived on scene.

According to Det. Sgt. Gary Giroux, Carpio was not a resident of the apartment and is known to police.

Officers are conducting interviews, but there have been no suspects identified at this point, Giroux told CP24.

It is unclear how long the man's body had been inside the apartment before he was found.

One man who works at a gas station near the crime scene told CP24 that crime has plagued the area in recent weeks.

"In the past few weeks we have had a robbery and now this, so it is really scary for the people who work here at night," he said. "It’s just not safe here anymore."

A post-mortem examination has been scheduled for Monday morning.

Investigators are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact police at 416-808-7400 or to call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477).
