Investigators have laid charges after a 75-year-old man was fatally struck by a pickup truck while riding his bicycle in Mississauga late Sunday night.

According to witnesses, the driver stopped at the scene on Burnhamthorpe Road East, near Tomken Road, and exited the truck, but then got back in the vehicle and drove off.

Peel Regional Police said the driver was arrested a short distance away on Eastgate Parkway.

The hit-and-run collision occurred shortly before 11 p.m. as the cyclist travelled west on Burnhamthorpe, police said in a news release.

The name of the victim, who is a Mississauga resident, has not been released.

Police said Jeffery Sanford, a 46-year-old Mississauga man, is charged with failing to remain at the scene of a collision causing death and driving while under suspension.

Despite the arrest, police still want to hear from people who witnessed the collision.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Peel Regional Police’s major collision bureau at 905-453-2121 ext. 3710 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
