York Regional Police are searching for a 25-year-old Scarborough woman last seen in Markham two days ago.

Police said Taneesha Brown was last seen in the area of McCowan Road and Castlemore Avenue, at an aunt’s house, at about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday. Police said she told family members she was going outside for fresh air and never returned.

Her brother, Kevin Mazerolle, told CP24 that she has run away before and often does so when she “feels threatened.”

“This time it’s different because we haven’t heard anything from her for two days,” he said.

Her father, Uriel Brown, said he introduced her to the teachings of the Nation of Islam, a Muslim sect originating in the Midwestern U.S. in the 1930s. Uriel said he fears his daughter is unable to differentiate between the religious texts and reality.

“The last time I saw her she was talking in a religious context - ‘repent, it’s the end of the world,’” he said.

It is believed Brown was not wearing clothing suitable for the cold when she left. York police Const. Andy Pattenden said it is unlike her to go missing, and she does not have any money or a cellphone.

Uriel said his daughter might have returned to her home in Scarborough, but then realized she didn’t have her keys.

“We just want to know that you’re okay,” Uriel said. “It’s been very stressful, I can’t function at work.”

He urged anyone who spots his daughter to call police.

“We love you a lot, we miss you a lot, come home safe,” Mazerolle said.

She is described as black, five-foot-five, with shoulder-length black hair and pink highlights.

She was last seen wearing a white knee-length dashiki, which is a loose tunic originating from West Africa, white pants and a white hijab. She was also carrying a black purse.

“We’re all very concerned for your safety and we want to make sure that you come home safe,” York police Det.-Const. Colin Leung Hip said in a message to Taneesha Thursday night.

Leung Hip said investigators are currently following up on several tips and leads.

“Officers as we speak right now are conducting some investigations into her whereabouts,” he said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 866-876-5423, ext. 7541, or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477 (TIPS).
