A Toronto police officer remains in hospital in life-threatening condition following a crash in the city's west end Saturday afternoon, Deputy Police Chief Peter Sloly says.

Speaking to reporters outside St. Michael’s Hospital Saturday evening Sloly said the officer -- identified as 34-year-old Const. John Zivcic -- has undergone several surgeries, but remains in critical condition.

“The officer has undergone a series of medical operations. The most recent one we have been advised by the surgeon the officer has received life-threatening injuries,”Sloly told reporters.

He said Zivcic’s family is now with him in hospital.

Sloly said Police Chief Bill Blair is out of town, but has been fully informed of the situation.

Toronto Police Association President Mike McCormack also spoke with reporters Saturday night.

“Our concerns are with the family right now,” McCormack said. “We’re here to support the family through this terribly, terribly difficult time.”

Zivcic is a divisional traffic officer with seven years of service on the force, McCormack said.

Zivcic was working alone when the collision happened near Bloor Street West and Neilson Drive, just west of Highway 427, shortly before 4 p.m., Sloly said.

He was rushed to hospital via emergency run with life-threatening injuries, EMS said.

Paramedics said the driver of a second vehicle was also transported to hospital with minor injuries. Sloly later confirmed she was treated for minor injuries.

The circumstances leading up to the crash were not immediately clear. However the impact left a trail of debris in the intersection, with the police cruiser’s bumper ending up detached and scattered several metres from the vehicle. A tire could also be seen lying in the middle of the road along with two police vests. A silver sedan was positioned at about 90 degrees from the cruiser.

A collision reconstruction team is on the scene.

Sloly said the province’s Special Investigation Unit was not called in because the driver of the other vehicle sustained only minor injuries, meaning the situation did not meet the SIU’s mandate.
