The Toronto Transit Commission is investigating after an employee was caught on video steering a bus with his wrist while eating chips and resting one foot on the vehicle’s dashboard.

The video, which was sent to CP24 Tuesday, was taken by 17-year-old high school student Gabriel Cordova while he was riding the 34A bus eastbound on Eglinton Avenue near Mount Pleasant Road.

In the video, the driver is seen munching on chips while using his right wrist to steer the bus. His left foot is also seen resting on the vehicle’s dashboard.

"He totally was not paying attention to the road. His hands were not on the steering wheel. Should he have hit a pot hole or something like that, and Eglinton has so much construction, it would have been so detrimental to our safety," Cordova told Newstalk1010 Tuesday.

"I was on the bus for 10 minutes and when I got off he was still doing it."

TTC spokesperson Brad Ross told CP24 Tuesday that the driver's behaviour was inappropriate.

Ross said drivers are allowed to eat on the job but only when the bus is stopped and it is safe to do so.

"It (the video) was disappointing. The rules are clear. We want our operators to operate safely," Ross said.

"We are carrying 50, 60 people on a bus and we want our operators to be 100 per cent attentive to the road."

Ross added that the driver will need to be interviewed before any disciplinary action is taken.

"We need to speak to the operator and give them an opportunity to respond before we make any decisions. We need to not rush to a snap judgment," he noted.

"Maybe there was something going on that we don’t know about."

Ross said there are a range of disciplinary measures that could be taken but it will be up to the driver's managers to decide.

Cordova said when he took the video, his intention was not to get the bus driver in trouble.

"I certainly hope he doesn’t get penalized too heavily," he said.

"But I’d really like if the TTC brought to his attention how his behaviour was jeopardizing not only his safety but the safety of all of the passengers on the bus."
