An off-duty firefighter is being credited for rescuing a woman from a burning building Tuesday afternoon.

The woman in her 60s is being treated for serious burns and smoke inhalation after she was pulled from an apartment suite at 173 Gary Dr., near Jane Street and Highway 400.

An off-duty firefighter happened to be inside Brioni Supermarket, located beneath the apartment suite, when the two-alarm fire broke out.

The firefighter carried the woman out of the building minutes before emergency crews arrived.

Toronto Fire Services Capt. Mike Strapko says the woman's injuries may have been much worse if not for the off-duty firefighter's rescue.

Strapko says the firefighter will be given the Rescue Merit Award.
