ORANGEVILLE, Ont. - Provincial police said Thursday there's no reason to suspect a "serious assault" on a woman in her home near Orangeville, Ont., is linked to the unsolved murder of Sonia Varaschin.

Police say a 44-year-old woman is in critical but stable condition at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto after being attacked in her home on Tuesday.

The victim's home is located in the town of Mono, a 20-minute drive from Varaschin's house in the central Ontario town of Orangeville.

Varaschin, 42, was reported missing in August and her body was found in a wooded area a few days later.

In September, police found a footprint they believe to be her killer's but no arrests have been made in the case.

Ontario Provincial Police said in a release Thursday that both cases are under investigation and there's no immediate reason to link them.

"At this time, there is no reason to suspect that the homicide is related in any way to the assault investigation in Mono and both of these investigations are being conducted independently and directed by OPP major case managers from the Criminal Investigation Branch," the release said.
