One pedestrian is dead following a collision in Markham Thursday evening, York Regional Police have confirmed.

Police say they responded to the call for two pedestrians struck on Markham Road, at Elson Street, shortly after 6:30 p.m.

Police say two vehicles collided before the pedestrians, both women, were struck on the southwest corner of the intersection.

One woman died as a result of her injuries, police at the scene told CP24. The other was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police are still trying to identify both women, who are both approximately fifty years old and of South Asian descent.

The area is currently closed as police continue their investigation.

There is currently no word on whether charges will be laid in connection with the collision.
