MARKHAM, Ont. - A pilot was killed in the crash of a small plane on Sunday afternoon near an airport just north of Toronto, the second deadly crash in the area in less than a month.

The Cessna crashed into a parking lot of a building near the Buttonville airport in Markham, Ont.

York police would not give out details on the pilot.

Transportation Safety Board official Rae Simpson said the plane was used to tow advertising banners and they are investigating the crash.

"We know that the aircraft had come back from a banner towing mission and had dropped a banner near the runway which is standard practice for banner towing," he said.

Witnesses said the plane which could be seen from a busy highway seemed to fall from the sky.

"I saw this plane turning, it was going south, then all of a sudden the nose went down and straight into the ground," said Tom Strezos.

In late May, a pilot and passenger were killed when a small plane crashed into a building after taking off from the same airport.

The pilot, Paul Jess, and a female passenger died when his single-engine plane crashed through the roof of Thinkway Toys, half a kilometre from Buttonville.

The father of three adult children, who grew up in Oakville, Ont., was a very experienced pilot who had flown extensively throughout North America.
