OTTAWA - Prime Minister Harper's move to suspend Parliament until March is getting a fierce reaction from a number of circles.

Nelson Wiseman, a constitutional expert at the University of Toronto, calls the move an "abuse" of power.

He says this is the third time Harper has suspended Parliament which subverts the democratic process and is "alarming for parliamentary democracy."

NDP Leader Jack Layton says Harper just doesn't want to answer questions about the economy, handling of Afghan detainees and climate change.

The Tories say they need to make a clean break now that the economy is no longer in crisis.

MPs were to return on Jan. 25 but Parliament will now start on March 3rd with a speech from the throne, followed by a new budget.

It also means all committees will be disbanded, scuttling the hearings into the controversial handling of Afghan detainees.
