A widespread power outage in Ajax and Pickering left 10,000 customers without electricity and knocked out power to traffic lights across both cities on Tuesday morning.

The electricity stopped flowing after a switch failure cut power to a transformer station, according to Veridian, the company that delivers the region's power. The switch had been damaged during Sunday's massive storm.

The blackout began at 9:30 a.m., with service resuming at about 10:20 a.m. after crews rerouted power around the damaged station. Permanent repairs are currently underway.

In the case of any power outage, drivers should treat unpatrolled intersections as an all-way stop.
