Power has been restored to all but a handful of homes in Toronto that were without electricity early Wednesday morning.

Toronto Hydro says the few customers that are still affected should have power by this evening.

People in about 1,500 homes in central Toronto woke up early Wednesday morning to the blackout.

Toronto Hydro says the blackout affected the area surrounded by Eglinton Avenue in the north, St. Clair Avenue to the south, Bathurst Street to the west and Avenue Road to the east.

The area without power also included Marshall McLuhan Catholic Secondary School.

The TTC's Yonge-University-Spadina line was also affected by the outage during the morning rush hour. Service returned to normal at about 9 a.m.

Toronto Hydro says a still-unknown equipment failure caused the blackouts.
