CP24 has learned that a staff report by the Toronto Public Works committee is recommending to city council that there only be one marathon in the city each year.

Currently there are two annual marathons, the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon and the Toronto Goodlife Fitness Marathon.

The Toronto Marathon race director Jay Glassman said the staff report will go before the full public works committee on Feb. 2. If it passes, it will then go before city council.

Coun. Brian Ashton says that while there are economic and social benefits in having one marathon, the disruption to city life brought on by two marathons is no longer acceptable.

If the proposal goes ahead, the city will open bidding to the two existing marathon organizations as well as any new groups wishing to host such a race.
