TORONTO - Thousands marched in Toronto today to protest a gaffe by a police officer that they say points to wider problem on the force.

Dressed in high heels and fishnet stockings, participants in the so-called "slut walk" marched on Toronto police headquarters.

They called on police to stop blaming rape survivors for what happened to them.

The rally was organized after a Toronto police officer told York University students that they could avoid rape by not dressing "like sluts."

The officer later apologized, but rally organizers say his comments reveal persistent attitudes within law enforcement that fault victims of sexual assault.

Sonya Barnett, one of the event's organizers, says those attitudes are one of the main reasons women are so reluctant to report sexual assault.

She says sexual assault is about power and has nothing to do with the victim's appearance.
