With a return to seasonal weather on the horizon, Toronto's run of mild weather is about to come to a miserable end.

Rain, snow and falling temperatures are expected later this week after days of being spoiled by above-normal weather.

The weather will remain mild Wednesday with a high of 5 C and a low of 3 C, but rain is expected to begin in the evening and continue into Thursday.

Environment Canada is calling for snow and local blowing snow due to high winds Friday, along with a high of -2 C and a low of -5 C as a weather system stalls over the region.

Five to 10 centimetres of snow is possible in the Greater Toronto Area.

The heaviest snowfall, up to 15 centimetres, may occur northeast of Georgian Bay, but there is considerable uncertainty as to the exact swath of heavy snow, Environment Canada said.

Weather warnings and watches may be issued, and Friday morning's commute may be hazardous due to brisk winds, blowing snow and falling temperatures, Environment Canada said.

Saturday will be even cooler with a high of -6 C and a low of -8 C, along with a chance of more snow.

In its long-term forecast, Environment Canada is predicting a high of -5 C and low of -11 C Sunday before a chance of more flurries Monday and Tuesday.

Normal temperatures for this time of year are highs of -2 C and lows of -9 C.

Meanwhile, a special weather statement was issued for Toronto and communities in southern and eastern Ontario early Wednesday due to dense fog that was reducing visibility before the fog burned off after sunrise.
