STRATFORD - The cheers for Christopher Plummer continued Wednesday, a day after he nabbed an Oscar nomination for his charming turn in "Beginners."

Director Des McAnuff congratulated the Toronto-born acting legend on behalf of the Stratford Shakespeare Festival, where Plummer is slated to debut his one-man play "A Word or Two" this summer.

"I'm delighted by this richly deserved nomination for one of the truly great actors of our time," McAnuff, the festival's artistic director, said in a statement from Seoul, Korea, where his production of "Doctor Zhivago" opens Friday at the Charlotte Theatre.

"In his long and distinguished career, both on screen and on stage, Christopher Plummer has constantly astonished and delighted us with his mastery of his art, and his superb performance in 'Beginners' reveals yet another facet of his brilliance."

Plummer, 82, is up for the best-supporting actor Oscar for playing a dying widower who comes out of the closet. Ewan McGregor plays his son.

This is Plummer's second supporting-actor Oscar nomination -- his first came in 2010 for his role as Russian author Leo Tolstoy in "The Last Station."
