A suitcase containing human remains has been recovered from Lake Ontario, Toronto police have confirmed.

Police say the suitcase was discovered by two boaters at around 11 a.m. Wednesday near Bluffer’s Park.

The boaters towed the suitcase to shore and opened it, only to make the grisly discovery.

They promptly called police to report what they had found.

At a press conference Wednesday evening, Toronto police Det. Les Dunkley said that the remains discovered are that of a “badly decomposed torso.”

“We can’t tell at this time whether it’s a male or female,” Dunkley told reporters at the press conference.

Dunkley said the case is currently being treated as a suspicious death investigation.

A post-mortem exam has been scheduled for Thursday morning.

Police have yet to confirm a connection between today’s discovery and the death and dismemberment of 41-year-old Hua Guang Liu, who was first reported missing on Aug. 10.

On Aug. 15, hikers found a severed foot in the Credit River in Hewick Meadows Park in Mississauga, sparking a large-scale search of the river and park.

Police later found Liu's head and hands in the river before the search moved to the West Highland Creek in Scarborough, where two calves, a thigh and arm were found.

Liu’s ex-boyfriend Chun Qi Jian, 40, of Scarborough, has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with her death.

Her torso has never been recovered.
