TORONTO - Hundreds of Tamil Canadians gathered Tuesday at the Ontario legislature to remember the thousands of minority Tamils killed a year ago as Sri Lanka's civil war ended.

Last May 18, Sri Lanka's government declared victory in its 25-year civil war against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.

The group's leader was killed and the last stretch of rebel-controlled land captured -- but thousands of Tamil civilians were also killed during the final violence between the rebels and the Sri Lankan military.

Last spring in Toronto, Tamil groups held vigils and protests to urge Canada's government to press for a ceasefire in Sri Lanka.

Some groups also organized roadblocks on some busy routes, drawing the ire of motorists and authorities.

International groups have called for a full investigation into alleged war crimes committed by Sri Lankan forces.
