Toronto District School Board trustees have voted to axe 430 education assistant positions, adding to deep cuts already announced last week.

Those cut will have the option of being retrained as early childhood educators, according to a release issued by the TDSB.

"I'm proud that we were able to work with our partners on a creative solution that will see many [education assistants] continue working with the board," TDSB Chair Chris Bolton said in the release.

"Just like working with the City of Toronto to save our community pools, by working together we were able to make the best of a difficult situation in these challenging financial times."

Wednesday night's vote follows the decision to chop 200 full-time high school teaching positions, 134 office staff positions and 17 elementary vice-principals.

The cuts are being made to help the board offset a projected budget shortfall of roughly $110 million.

The protection of full-day kindergarten, which required the board to hire additional educators, is being cited as a major contributor to the current budget woes.

The cuts are expected to cover roughly $51 million of the budget shortfall.
