A massive crowd cheered, hugged and kissed as midnight broke at Nathan Phillips Square in Toronto's downtown, in what appeared to be the city's biggest New Year's Eve party to ring in 2010.

Families and others had gathered for an evening of events at the square, including performances by cast of 1970s-themed musical "Rock of Ages," Montreal band The Mission District and Karl Wolf -- singer of the pop hit "Africa."

The event was alcohol-free, unlike many others going on in bars and residences throughout the GTA.

With so many people out on the town, police were out in full force making sure everyone played by the rules. RIDE programs were peppered throughout busy and less busy streets in an effort to deter intoxicated driving.

The TTC has also tried to ensure Torontonians avoid drinking and driving, offering free service between midnight and 4 a.m. All TTC subway, bus and streetcar routes will operate until 4 a.m. with the regular night service operating after 4 a.m. until 9 a.m.
