Tuesday was day one in the trial for one of two lesbian lovers charged in the murder of a Toronto man in October 2006.

Ashleigh Pechaluk's trial began today and she's facing first degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder charges. Her girlfriend Nicola Puddicombe is also charged.

The two women allegedly used an axe to kill 36-year-old Dennis Hoy while he was sleeping in an Etobicoke apartment.

The crown alleges Pechaluk hated her female lover's long-time boyfriend Hoy.

The court also heard that Puddicombe was the sole beneficiary of Hoy's $250,000 life insurance policy.
