Two suspects charged previously with second-degree murder in connection with the death of a seven-year-old Toronto girl have now been charged with first-degree murder.

Police say they found the girl's body with obvious signs of trauma in the apartment of her caregiver, Donna Irving, 29. Her boyfriend, Warren Johnson, is also charged.

Bernice Sampson, the girl's mother, had been friends with Irving, for 10 years, and put her daughter in Irving's care since January while she sorted out her personal problems, which included problems with drugs.
