Ontario Provincial Police say a man and woman who were struck by a vehicle on Highway 407 in Markham on Monday afternoon have died of their injuries.

The double fatal collision occurred in the highway's westbound lanes, between Yonge Street and Bayview Avenue, just after 12 p.m.

According to police, a silver Toyota Echo with four passengers pulled over to the side of the highway after getting a flat tire.

Two of the passengers, a man and a woman, both in their 60s, got out to inspect the vehicle.

The two victims and their vehicle were then struck by a Toyota pickup.

One victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was pronounced dead in hospital.

The two other occupants of the vehicle were uninjured, and are currently being interviewed by police.

The female driver of the pickup truck was taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries, police said.

There is no word from police on any charges.

Highway 407's westbound lanes were blocked at Bayview Avenue for the police investigation.

The lanes reopened shortly after 4 p.m.
