COMMERCE CITY, Colo. - Stefan Frei made three saves and undermanned Toronto FC tied 0-0 with the Colorado Rapids in Major League Soccer action Sunday night.

Frei made two saves in the second half for his third shutout of the season.

Striker Alan Gordon (groin) didn't make the trip, while injuries kept midfielders Jacob Peterson (ankle) and Tony Tchani (knee) out of the lineup. Midfielder Julian de Guzman served his one-game yellow card suspension for Toronto FC, which is winless in five road games.

"If you were going to analyse the whole game I believe that we at least had three good opportunities, really good chances to score, which were rare in the game," Toronto FC head coach Aron Winter said. "Today was a good result with the short time that we had to recover. Today we made the game very difficult for our opponent."

Matt Pickens made three saves for Colorado, which was without forward Omar Cummings (sprained right ankle) and midfielder Brian Mullan, who served the fifth game of a 10-game suspension.

Connor Casey played only in the first half for Colorado.

Toronto FC didn't have a shot on goal in the first half. Javier Martina's shot from along the endline went through the box and was deflected harmlessly out of danger.

Then in the 45th minute, Colorado defender Anthony Wallace's blocked Nick Soolsma's shot before it reached Pickens.

"We had some shots and if some moments of the game were different we could have gotten three points. We had a big opportunity before halftime," Winter said. "Just some different outcomes on plays and we could have got the points."

Toronto FC was more aggressive in the second half. Pickens came out to catch Joao Plata's shot from 20 yards out.

Richard Eckersley broke free to take a shot from 25 yards out in the 50th minute that Pickens stopped with both legs.

"We came out from halftime wondering why it is always other teams that come out straight away and pin us back in the first ten minutes of the half, why don't we pin them back," Eckersley said. "That was our mindset and I think that we did that. We got in their face instead of the other way around. We will try to build on that."

Toronto's Mikael Yourassowsky broke loose along the sideline and got off a shot that grazed the crossbar in the 60th minute.

Frei had to make a fingertip save of Wallace's shot from 35 yards out for Colorado. Frei was shaken up briefly when he made a lunging save of a free kick by Sanna Nyassi in the 87th minute.
