TORONTO - Victoria swimmer Jeremy Bagshaw will be Canada's flag-bearer at the inaugural Youth Olympic Games later this month in Singapore.

Born in Singapore, Bagshaw was five when he moved with his family to Victoria. He holds the Canadian 15-to-17 national record in the 400-metre freestyle.

Canada is sending 60 athletes to the Games, which are for competitors aged 14 to 18.

The Canadians will participate in 18 sports, supported by 23 coaches and eight mission team members.

They include all current 26 Olympic summer sports, as well as new mixed-gender events and new formats such as three-on-three basketball, head to head canoe-kayak and a combination of BMX, mountain biking and road biking.

The Games run Aug. 14 to 26 in Singapore.
