A low-pressure system is moving into Ontario overnight and it could create a messy and slow commute for motorists Wednesday morning.

In a special weather statement, Environment Canada said 10 to 15 centimetres of snow could fall before the system moves out of the province later Wednesday, with a few centimetres expected before the morning commute.

Snow will spread into the Golden Horseshoe at about midnight and it is expected to reach communities north of Lake Ontario overnight and in eastern Ontario early Wednesday morning.

Most regions, including Toronto, may receive a few centimetres of snow before the morning commute, Environment Canada said.

The Niagara and Hamilton regions could see heavier snowfall, with more than 15 cm possible. A snowfall warning was issued for Oakville, Burlington, Hamilton and Niagara Region.

Motorists are being told to prepare for a tricky commute Wednesday morning. Roads may be slippery and visibility may be reduced in open areas.

Air Canada issued a travel alert ahead of the system to warn passengers that flights may be affected. Passengers are asked to check their flight status before heading to the airport.
