A 36-year-old woman was charged with first-degree murder Monday morning after police found her husband's body in their basement apartment last week.

On Monday afternoon, Toronto police identified the victim as Dong Huang, 40, of Toronto. The cause of death has not been released.

Officials were first alerted to his death Wednesday afternoon when police were called to a home on Ridgecrest Drive in Scarborough.

There they found Huang's lifeless body in a basement apartment.

Xiu Jin Teng was arrested at the scene and charged with committing an indignity to a dead body. However, the charge was upgraded to first-degree murder during the woman's court appearance Monday morning.

A neighbour of the couple told CTV Toronto last week that she checked the basement apartment after she saw the woman move her things out of the home. That's when she spotted the body, she said.

The neighbour also said that the accused told her that her husband had died of a heart attack.

Police said in a news release Monday afternoon that they continue to investigate the case and want to speak with anyone who spoke with the accused during the month of February.

Anyone with information is asked to call Det. Sgt. Brian Borg at 416-808-7400.
