LOS ANGELES -- Tavis Smiley's new book about his three-decade friendship with Maya Angelou will be developed for the stage with Broadway director Kenny Leon.

TV and radio host Smiley and the Tony Award-winning Leon said Wednesday they are collaborating on adapting "My Journey With Maya."

Angelou, author of the acclaimed memoir "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings," died last year at age 86.

The book, out next week, focuses on the lessons Angelou shared about life and how to live it.

Smiley is a writer and host of PBS' "Tavis Smiley" and public radio's "The Tavis Smiley Show."

Leon, who won a Tony for the 2014 revival of "Raisin in the Sun," was announced this week as director of new TV and stage versions of the 1970s hit Broadway musical "The Wiz."
