About 120 new stations will be added to the Bike Share Toronto network over the next two weeks, effectively doubling the size and scope of the system.

Bike Share Toronto currently has about 1,000 bikes spread across 80 stations but beginning today crews will be setting up 120 additional stations and adding 1,000 bikes.

The expansion, which is scheduled to be completed by July 11, is being paid for with $4.9 million in previously announced provincial funding.

“Programs like Bike Share help keep our communities strong, create more jobs and ensure that people have transportation options they can rely on now and in the future,” Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca said in a press release. “Whether you bike to work, school or for leisure, this investment is about expanding the current network of bike stations to create a more sustainable way to get around.”

Bike Share Toronto stations are currently restricted to the downtown core but as part of the expansion efforts many of the new stations will be installed near transit stations and in denser communities away from the downtown core.

About 20 per cent of the new stations will also be located elsewhere in the Greater Toronto Area.

Bike Share Toronto charges members an annual fee and then allows them to check out bicycles for 30-minute increments from any of its stations.
