A Hamilton raccoon who clawed her way down a 10-storey building has proved once again that the crafty creatures are not to be underestimated.

The slick maneuver was captured on video in April and posted to YouTube on Tuesday by animal control workers.

According to Bill Dowd, owner of Skedaddle Humane Wildlife Control, the company went to the building after they got a call about a raccoon that was stuck on a 10th floor balcony.

An unusual call, Dowd decided to capture the encounter on camera.

Approaching the critter on the balcony with a net, Dowd attempted to get close enough to capture the creature so that he could take it down in the elevator.

However the raccoon had other ideas.

Glancing up at Dowd, the raccoon pauses for a moment and then turns and casually walks over to the corner. She then hoists herself up atop the balcony railing and looks back at Dowd. As he slowly approaches with the net, the raccoon grips the wall and begins climbing downward while still facing up.

She then slowly scales down the wall with her bare claws, making her way to a fifth floor balcony. From there she moves to another section of wall and continues facing downward before hopping off the wall and scampering away into a wooded area.

“Anyone who’s living in an apartment, it’s very very important that you don’t have chairs or garbage on your balcony because it is nesting season when these animals are looking to nest,” Dowd advised on the video.
