A stretch of Highway 403 in Hamilton has been reopened after a mudslide Friday morning forced the closure of the roadway for much of the day.

Approximately two feet of mud, trees and flooding had blocked some eastbound lanes of the highway between Main Street East and York Boulevard.

The mudslide occurred because of a broken water main in the area just before 8:30 a.m. By noon, the problem seemed to be getting worse as water continued to rush to the street, forming a messy pool on the roadway.

The highway was finally cleaned and reopened shortly before 10 p.m.
