One of Toronto’s oldest bars may soon be leaving the Bloor Street West building it has called home for nearly 150 years.

According to the Harbord Village Residents’ Association (HVRA), the owner of the building that the Brunswick House has called home since 1876 has terminated the operator’s lease.

“As of Dec. 31 the Brunswick House will remain only on a month-by-month basis until a new tenant is found,” a post on the association’s website reads.

According to the group, Boston Pizza is interested in signing a ‘long-term lease’ for the building’s main-floor space, so long as it can operate a patio on the premises, located on the southeast corner of Bloor Street and Brunswick Avenue.

“Before proceeding, the company wishes to know whether the neighbouring community would be supportive,” the association’s posting states.

Area residents are encouraged to attend a meeting Monday night to discuss the proposal.

“Neither the HVRA nor the Annex Residents’ Association (which are co-sponsoring the meeting) has taken a position on the matter. Both organizations want to know what neighbours think.”

In a statement sent to CP24, Boston Pizza confirmed that it had expressed an interest in the space.

“We’re looking forward to hearing feedback from the neighbourhood at the Harbord Village Residents’ Association meeting on Monday,” spokesperson Jordan Holm said.

In a Facebook post late Friday afternoon, the Brunswick House said it wanted to ‘clarify a few things,’ including the suggestion that its lease was terminated - a point the bar disputes.

“During discussions with our landlord, we have agreed to convert to a month-to-month lease, pending a new lease being agreed upon,” the post reads.

“We have upheld every tenet of our lease, and have been as surprised as everyone at the news that we were closing.

“The Brunny and the staff are going to put forth every effort into keeping the Brunswick House open for the good of our staff, our clientele, and to keep the legacy of the Brunny alive.”

Monday’s meeting is scheduled to start at the bar at 7:30 p.m.
