A 23-year-old Burlington man has been charged in connection with a hit-and-run that left a 13-year-old cyclist with serious injuries on Friday.

According to police, the male cyclist was in a crosswalk on Appleby Line when he was hit by a northbound Volkswagen that was attempting to turn left onto Taywood Drive.

Following the collision, police say the vehicle fled the scene.

A search of the area, however, resulted in the vehicle being located at a nearby residence a short time later.

Police say the driver eventually returned to the collision scene, where he was arrested for failure to stop at the scene of an accident causing bodily harm.

Meanwhile, the victim was airlifted to hospital in critical but non-life threatening condition. Police say his status has since been upgraded to stable.

Stephen Balon is expected to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Milton on Dec. 7.
